Editorial: First Amendment doesn’t give license to break the law

Journalist Don Lemon was indicted by a grand jury and then arrested. Instead of being an outsider reporting on an event, he was involved and helped facilitate the disruption of a church service on private property where people were practicing their First Amendment rights. Despite my observation that he is guilty, I don’t think ultimately he will be prosecuted.I can see this from two angles. I am a journalist now, but thirty years ago, I took part in a few peaceful protests. We were trained—very deliberately—on how not to escalate. We were taught to respect law enforcement, to comply with orders, and to accept arrest calmly if it came to that. We did not scream, curse, shove, threaten, or intimidate. We stood silently, except to maybe pray quietly. If we trespassed, we did so know
