Opinion: The Golden Pacific Powerline is a Transmission Line That Pays Off

When I served on the San Diego City Council, I spent eight years chairing the Infrastructure Committee. I learned a lesson in that job that I've never been able to shake: the most expensive thing a region can do is nothing. I watched what can happen to a fast-growing region that kept deciding the next generation could pay for projects that this one would rather not. Every street San Diego didn't repave in the 1990s and 2000s cost us more to fix in the 2010s. Every water main we deferred became a flood. Every "we'll deal with it later" turned into a bigger bill, paid by the next generation of taxpayers, with interest. The Inland Empire is growing faster than San Diego was.
