HEMET — A multivehicle crash on Florida Avenue sent an SUV into a building and ended with police apprehending a driver who reportedly fled on foot.
Hemet firefighters arrived to find two vehicles involved, including one that had struck a building.
According to witness accounts, a Hyundai Veloster traveling at high speed struck a Chrysler Aspen, causing the SUV to hit a streetlight and crash into the Salvation building. The Hyundai then struck the side of a westbound truck.
Witnesses said the Hyundai driver pulled into a driveway and fled on foot, leaving a passenger described as his girlfriend in the car.
The truck’s occupants and other witnesses followed the driver to the dd’s Discounts parking lot. He reportedly entered a hair supply store, where witnesses said he tried to buy a wig with counterfeit money.
Hemet police officers entered the business minutes later and apprehended him without incident.
Information about injuries, the driver’s identity and possible charges was not provided.
