Governor declares date for special election to fill state senate seat

Gov. Gavin Newsom proclaimed May 12 as the special general election date to fill the 28th Senate District seat vacated two weeks ago by Sen. Jeff Stone, R-La Quinta.The governor’s proclamation provides that the primary for the race will coincide with the statewide primary March 3.Stone resigned from the Senate Nov. 1, to take over as western regional director for the U.S. Department of Labor, a post to which he was appointed by President Donald Trump.He was first elected to the Senate in 2014, and his second term began this past January, leaving three years to go in his current term.Assembly member Melissa Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore has announced she will run for the open seat.The last special election for state Senate in Riverside County occurred in 2010, when the lat
