‘If you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying?’

First, let me be clear. I do not begrudge anyone doing their best to ensure that elections in the United States of America are fair. While they are undertaking the task of cleaning up our election process, I assume they will also tackle the issues of widespread voter suppression and the gerrymandering of districts throughout the country and particularly in historically red states. I’ll wait. In the meantime, let’s talk about the headline I choose for this column. For me, the saying – “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” – is a problem. It’s a cute saying, possibly attributed to NASCAR legend Richard Petty, but it’s become an accepted form of “effort” to use while climbing the ladder of perceived success.
