Valley News Staff Week of Jan. 3 Gene Wunderlich’s appointment as the mayor of Murrieta at the end of 2019 continued to cause surprise in the new year. Wunderlich had been appointed to the City Council to fill former councilmember Randon Lane’s vacant seat just three months before. A man fled while sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a domestic dispute Jan. 2, then led authorities on a lengthy pursuit that ended when the suspect was shot and killed by deputies on a Murrieta street. The chase began in French Valley and continued several miles to an area near Jefferson Avenue and Grizzly Ridge Drive, on the north end of Murrieta, where a Murrieta Police Department BearCat armored vehicle disabled the suspect’s vehicle, and the man got out and began firing at authorit
