TEMECULA – Shelters often are the first stop for people who want to become pet parents. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said around 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters each year, and 3.2 million are cats. Although shelters do their best to get these animals into new, loving homes, the Humane Society of the United States said roughly 3 million cats and dogs are euthanized in shelters each year.
