Community leaders and equestrian enthusiasts across Temecula were stunned last week when the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced it would not move forward with Galway Downs as the venue for the 2028 Olympic equestrian and para-equestrian competitions.
The news was followed Tuesday, April 15, by an official announcement that Santa Anita Park in Arcadia will instead host the Olympic equestrian events.
In a public statement, Galway Downs expressed disappointment over the decision but affirmed their ongoing commitment to the sport and the Temecula Valley community.
“We were ready,” wrote Galway Downs President Robert Kellerhouse. “Ready to welcome the world to the beauty of Temecula Valley. Ready to host Olympic athletes on our proven international stage. Ready to showcase equestrian sport at its very best.”
The Galway Downs team extended gratitude to Congressman Darrell Issa for calling for clarity on how the venue change was decided. The sudden shift has left local organizers and stakeholders seeking answers.
Despite the setback, Galway Downs emphasized their vision remains intact.
“Hosting the Olympics would have been a milestone—but it was just one part of a greater vision,” the statement said. “Our long-term commitment to building an Olympic-caliber equestrian legacy in Temecula remains stronger than ever.”
Galway Downs will continue to host major equestrian competitions this spring, including five weeks of hunter/jumper events starting May 21 with the FEI CSI3* Temecula Valley National 1. International dressage returns with the Pacific Coast CDI, May 1–4, followed by Spring Horse Trials and the Preliminary Challenge & Gala, May 9–11.
Community members are encouraged to participate in the upcoming events as exhibitors, sponsors, spectators, or volunteers.
“We invite you to join us and celebrate all that’s ahead,” Kellerhouse said. “The future is still incredibly bright.”
