A Murrieta family is facing profound loss after two young girls were killed in an early morning mobile home fire Saturday, Dec. 20, while their parents remain hospitalized with serious injuries, according to relatives.
The victims were identified by family members as 12-year-old Emma and 11-year-old Abigail. Emma’s twin sister, 12-year-old Ashley, was transported to a hospital and later released. She is now staying with a family member.
Jessica Hales, the sister-in-law of Stacey Hales, the mother who suffered burns and the loss of her daughters, said both parents are still hospitalized. She said the mother was transported to a burn center and has reportedly lost her eyesight. The father, Adam Keenan, remains hospitalized with conditions not publicly known.
According to Murrieta Fire & Rescue, crews were dispatched at 4:42 a.m. to the 41000 block of Knight Drive following a 911 call reporting a residential structure fire. Firefighters arrived to find a mobile home fully engulfed in flames, along with a carport, three vehicles, two outbuildings and a large pine tree.
Fire crews immediately entered rescue mode, launching an aggressive interior attack while searching for occupants. Due to rapidly deteriorating structural conditions, firefighters were forced to transition to a defensive operation. The fire was knocked down in approximately 45 minutes.
Fire officials said five people were inside the residence at the time of the fire. Three occupants were transported to local hospitals, while two were found deceased inside the structure. Multiple household pets also died in the blaze.
A joint investigation by Murrieta Fire & Rescue and the Murrieta Police Department is underway to determine the origin and cause of the fire. Authorities have not released official victim identifications.
Jessica Hales said the tragedy follows earlier devastation for the family. Stacey Hales lost her oldest son, Braden, in a car accident three years ago. “I just don’t know how she is going to get through this,” Jessica Hales said.
A GoFundMe fundraiser has been established by a friend of the family to assist with immediate and long-term needs, including medical expenses, housing, transportation and home care. As of Sunday afternoon, more than $26,000 had been raised of the $40,000 goal.

A GoFundMe has been set up by a friend of the family. (Editorial Note: The two girls shown in the picture on the GoFundMe may not depict the young girls who passed away. Their ages were 11 and 12-years-old.)
As of Sunday afternoon, $12,477 has been raised. Discussion with family indicated that after they have more of an idea of future expenses, including replacing the cars, housing, hospital bills and home care, the GoFundMe will likely be increased.
