Driver arrested on DUI suspicion after fatal crash involving motorized wheelchair

A person using a motorized wheelchair died after being struck by a vehicle Friday night, and the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.

The collision was reported about 8:56 p.m. Friday at the intersection of Garfield Avenue and Menlo Avenue in Hemet

According to initial reports from the scene, Hemet Fire Department crews arrived to find the victim on the ground while officers with the Hemet Police Department were performing CPR. The involved vehicle had come to rest in the roadway a short distance from the collision scene.

The victim was transported by American Medical Response ambulance to a hospital in critical condition but later died from their injuries.

Police closed both eastbound and westbound lanes of Menlo Avenue while investigators processed the scene.

The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and additional charges. Authorities have not released the identities of either the driver or the victim, and the investigation remains ongoing.
