The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California awarded a design-build contract to upgrade the pressure control structure and electrical system at Lake Mathews.The MWD board voted unanimously Aug. 18 to award the contract to PCL Construction West Coast Inc. The initial contract is for $29.2 million, although it will be amended for construction after a guaranteed maximum price is established. The board also increased a contract with Carollo Engineers Inc. for advisory services.Lake Mathews was constructed in the 1930s as the western end of the Colorado River Aqueduct, which conveys water from Parker Dam. Untreated water stored in the lake is released through 10 fixed-cone valves into a small forebay discharge facility before traveling through MWD’s Upper Feeder to the Weymo
