The Hemet Public Library recently announced it is no longer charging late fees. It is joining many fellow California and national libraries in the fine-free movement. Patrons will only pay for a book that is lost or damaged beyond repair while it is checked out to their care.

“We know better than anyone what a valuable resource our library is to this community,” Librarian Jordan LaMont said. “It’s a point of reference for resources, a meeting place for gatherers, a bastion of free knowledge in a world of paywalls, and research tells us that fines are barriers to our mission, not the deterrent they were designed to be.”

She added that the library and its dedicated staff hope that this change will welcome new patrons and welcome back returning patrons. For those interested in more than books, the library hosts many events that appeal to all ages. One coming up for those 18 and older will be on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. in the library’s conference room. Hosted by Cynthia’s Sweet Treats, attendees will be decorating spooky jack-o’-lanterns at the “No Tricks, Only Treats!” event. Space is limited and reservations are required by calling 951-765-2440.
