When members of the Hemet Valley Art Association (HVAA) joined forces with members of The Lakes at Hemet West’s Tender Loving Care Club (TLC) it resulted in a successful Art in the Park fundraiser, Oct. 17. More than 35 artists exhibited and sold their creations to the many art-loving guests who attended. Linda Baranek, a resident of The Lakes, was in charge of the event from start to finish. She is the Director of Special Activities for HVAA and is an active TLC club member.
Baranek worked closely with Debbie Collins, who is the Location Manager at The Lakes, and HVAA President Lynn Throckmorton to produce the first of its kind event that was well received. These three women were the advertising, financing, public relations, boots on the ground, team building, and cleanup crew for this first annual event. Many HVAA members and The Lakes residents volunteered their time to help make it happen. The purpose of the fundraiser is to build a foundation for supporting art and cultural events throughout the community.
Tender Loving Care is a national volunteer organization that was established at the senior park about 20 years ago by Jane Picananno, who moved out of state about two years ago. It began with greeting cards being sent to residents.
“We have about 10 active members who donate their time to many events with the purpose of providing comfort to those in need,” Baranek said. “We sponsor all memorials requested here in the clubhouse, providing everything needed including chicken for the potluck dinner. We send cards, offer support, provide meals, and escort ladies who seldom leave their homes to the monthly ladies’ luncheon. We provide walkers, wheelchairs, shower chairs, etc. where needed and just help out wherever needed. We offer rides to grocery stores, medical appointments and more. I could go on and on about the good TLC does for the community.”
The club also puts on a monthly movie night where about 50 residents enjoy free hot dogs and popcorn. Donations usually cover the cost of that event. The nonprofit organization earns money throughout the year through its bake sales, donations, and now the Art in the Park event.
“Our current president, Becki Grass, is highly respected, loved, and works endlessly, helping to improve residents’ lives where possible,” Baranek said. “She is also president of our homeowners association and an amazing lady. My involvement? I’m a team member just trying to do my part.”
All funds raised at the art event are being shared fifty-fifty. HVAA has many expenses just to keep its Downtown Hemet doors open, from rent to utilities. TLC will use their funds wisely for the betterment of residents in The Lakes at Hemet West community.
Throckmorton said the Art in the Park event was a highlight of her time on the HVAA board of directors. “I’ve never seen such happiness at an event!” she said.
