Pickup crash ignites brush fire, closes Pala-Temecula Road for hours

The California Department of Forestry (CDF) reports that the fire in Pala, in the 38900 block of Pala Rd, just after 1:15 pm on Sunday, June 7, has burned 2 1/2 acres. “The progression of the fire has been stopped. Units are strengthening containment lines at this time,” said CDF PIO Oscar Sotelo.

The collision was reported shortly after 1:15 p.m. near Temecula Creek Inn on Pala-Temecula Road. CHP dispatch logs indicate a Ford F-150 or Ford Pro 4X crashed into a tree before catching fire.

The flames quickly spread into nearby vegetation, prompting a large response from firefighters and law enforcement agencies.

By 1:20 p.m., CHP units reported brush burning in the area, and Cal Fire San Diego crews were dispatched to the scene. Additional reports indicated that the vehicle fire had spread to surrounding vegetation, prompting firefighters to request air support from a firefighting helicopter.

Authorities later reported the driver was able to escape the burning vehicle and climb out of a nearby creek bed. CHP logs noted the driver may have appeared to be under the influence, though no arrests or charges had been announced as of Sunday at 4:30pm.

As firefighters worked to contain the blaze, Pala-Temecula Road was shut down between Pechanga Parkway and State Route 79. CHP officials initially estimated the closure could last up to four hours.

At approximately 2 p.m., dispatchers reported the roadway remained closed and advised motorists to use alternate routes. Authorities also warned that smoke and firefighting operations could affect traffic throughout the area.

The extent of the driver’s injuries was not immediately available. CHP requested an Inland Valley unit to respond and obtain statements and injury information.

Firefighters ultimately stopped the forward progress of the blaze, though crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots and clearing the roadway.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
