LAKE MATHEWS (CNS) - A wildfire that broke out this afternoon just east of Lake Mathews charred about 50 acres before it was partially contained.
The non-injury blaze was reported at 2:55 p.m. in the 19000 block of Gustin Road, near Harley John Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. No homes or other structures were threatened.
Eighteen engine crews and five hand crews were sent to the location and encountered flames in open space, burning at a moderate rate to the northeast.
With the aid of two Cal Fire air tankers and a water-dropping helicopter, the brusher's forward rate of spread was stopped by 4:30 p.m., and firefighters were making steady progress completely encircling the blaze. Full containment was expected before nightfall.
