RIVERSIDE - A 34-year-old man who led Riverside police on a short vehicle pursuit fell and hit his head on a fire hydrant while trying to bail out of his moving vehicle and died at the scene, authorities said today.
The pursuit started about 9 p.m. Sunday when officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation at Van Buren Boulevard and Andrew Street, said Riverside police Lt. B. Crawford.
"A short pursuit ensued,'' Crawford said. He estimated the length at two minutes.
The suspect was westbound on Garfield Street from Van Buren Boulevard when he attempted to bail out of the vehicle while it was still moving and fell onto the pavement, the lieutenant said. The suspect may have been dragged but ultimately hit his head on a fire hydrant and died, Crawford said.
