TEMECULA (CNS) – Three people were injured today in a head-on collision at a Temecula intersection, where firefighters had to extricate the victims from the wreckage.

The crash happened around 3:50 p.m. at Joseph and Nicholas roads, just east of Highway 79, according to the California Highway Patrol. The agency said the two cars impacted at the location, but the circumstances weren’t immediately clear. Riverside County Fire Department crews arrived within 10 minutes and found the vehicles crumpled, trapping occupants in both cars, according to officials at the scene.

Firefighters extricated the three victims shortly after 4 p.m. Their injuries were described by officials as moderate to major. Three ambulances were requested to take the patients to a regional trauma center for treatment. Both CHP officers and county sheriff’s deputies were at the scene, but the CHP was expected to handle the investigation. The intersection was partially closed because of the wreck.
