On the girls’ soccer fields, sixteen local teams began their postseason journey this week, and after first-round action, less than half are moving on. The big surprise was Mira Costa, the No. 2 seed out of the Bay League, taking down local powerhouse Temecula Valley, 2-1.

The Mira Costa Mustangs, despite only having 2 losses this season, had 7 draws on the year, 5 of which came from league opponents. Temecula Valley (20-4-2) claimed their sixth-straight Southwestern League title this year, but a repeat trip to the finals would be thwarted by Mya Clarke and Taylor Southey, who scored first-half goals to lead the Mustangs to a big Division 1 upset on the road over the fourth-seeded Golden Bears.

Two other Southwestern League teams did mange to make the first-round work to their advantage as Murrieta Valley dominated St. Margaret’s, 4-0, in Division 3 action, while Vista Murrieta’s Destiny Cabrera scored a golden goal near the 100th minute of play as the Broncos managed a 1-0 victory over Citrus Valley in their Division 2 first round playoff match Wednesday night.
