New freeway signs point to region’s pioneer past
Tim O’LearySpecial to Valley NewsIt saddens me to see the present grip and choke our past. It gladdens me when the past is protected, cherished and celebrated.I was thrilled that a two-year push to spotlight one of our crucial historical sites succeeded when signs were recently installed near a pair of freeway exit ramps in south Temecula. The placement of a pair of signs by Caltrans workers likely went unnoticed by motorists warily threading their way through the $139 million freeway upgrade that has gripped Temecula’s I-15 corridor for two years. But the lack of public notice doesn’t dim the importance of the new signs that direct motorists to the Vail Ranch historic site. These signs could bring a bump in tourism and a greater awareness of our collective history.
