Bringing awareness to PTSD

National PTSD Awareness Month, which takes place each June, ushers in an array of awareness campaigns run for the benefit of PTSD Survivors. PTSD, which stands for post-traumatic stress disorder, can develop in individuals after experiencing a particularly traumatic event like war, or violent physical, sexual, or verbal assault, accidents, and so forth. Symptoms may include depression, anxiety, nightmares, paranoia, insomnia, disturbing thoughts, and much more. Many people recover from PTSD within a few days, weeks, or months. Yet, for others, the road to recovery may take a year or longer. This mental disorder is treatable, but due to a lack of knowledge and the stigma attached to seeking mental help, many choose to ignore the problem and suffer through it.
