Hiker takes fall, suffers head injury near San Jacinto

SAN JACINTO (CNS) - A man fell today while hiking on a hillside northeast of San Jacinto and had to be airlifted out of the canyon for treatment of head trauma. The hiker down call was received about 4:20 p.m. in Massacre Canyon, just off of Gilman Springs Road and Highway 79, according to the Riverside County Fire Department. A battalion chief at the scene said the victim, whose name was not released, took a spill and suffered a head injury, and witnesses summoned help. Firefighters reached the man about 4:50 p.m. and arranged for Cal Fire Helicopter 301 to hoist him aboard the chopper, which then transported him to a staging area below the canyon for retrieval by a Mercy Air helicopter. The patient was expected to be flown to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Vall
